What happens to the world in a magnetic pole shift?

SO what happens, besides compes going wrong, LOL. I know there will be earth quakes and volcanoes will blow and lets not forget the tidal waves. But how big and for how long would they last a couple of days , weeks , years ? The reason I ask is because then the ramifications are easier to predict and prepare for.
